Your Road to Certification
Before Training
Flying an airplane is a thrill! Find out if it is a good fit for you by going on a discovery flight. A discovery flight includes about an hour of flight time, where I'll show you around the local practice area. You'll have the controls once we're airborne. Once we land, if you decide that you'd like to persue certification as a Private Pilot, check off all the boxes below before committing.
Under Federal Regulations (14 CFR §61.103), in order to become a licensed Private Pilot, you'll need to
-
Be at least 17 years old. (Note: You can start training before turning 17 if you'll turn 17 before taking the Checkride. For efficient training, we wont start training if you are more than 5 months away from your 17th birthday.)
-
Read, write, and speak English.
-
Complete a home study ground school course OR receive in person ground training from an instructor.
-
Pass an aeronautical written test.
-
Receive required flight training and a logbook endorsement from an instructor certifying that you are ready to pass the practical test.
-
Pass your Checkride and get your ticket!
You'll also need a Medical Certificate (Third Class Minimum) however this is not required to start training, only once you are ready to solo will it be required. If you intend to become a professional pilot, it is recommended to get a First Class Medical to ensure you qualify, since it is required to become a professional pilot. We strongly suggest getting one before training, in case you have a disqualifying medical condition. To obtain a Medical Certificate, visit an Aviation Medical Examiner (most insurance policies cover this.) Find one at ameforesight.com/ame
Under TSA Regulations (49 CFR §1552) you must provide proof of US Citizenship prior to training. A passport or birth certificate will qualify. If you are not a US Citizen, you must receive authorization from TSA directly. Contact us in this case and we would be happy to assist. (Note: this is NOT required to go on a discovery flight)
Although not required, we strongly recommend completing a home study ground school course before starting. This significantly optimizes the learning process by establishing background knowledge in our areas of operation. Completing your ground school before starting will lead to faster learning and less time spent. If you want to step it up a notch, take your FAA written test after you complete your ground school! This ticks a box off of the requirements and will demonstrate that your ground knowledge is up to speed. We recommend King Schools or Gleim courses. You'll receive your endorsement for the written test after you finish, then just schedule an appointment at an FAA approved testing center and crush it!
