Where to Start?
Before training, use a discovery flight and the checklist below to confirm that private pilot certification is the right next step.
Before Training
Flying an airplane is a thrill. Find out if it is a good fit for you by going on a discovery flight. A discovery flight includes about an hour of flight time, where Dylan will show you around the local practice area. You will have the controls once airborne.
Once you land, if you decide that you would like to pursue certification as a Private Pilot, check off the items below before committing.
Private Pilot Requirements
Under Federal Regulations, 14 CFR 61.103, in order to become a licensed Private Pilot, you will need to:
- Be at least 17 years old. You can start training before turning 17 if you will turn 17 before taking the checkride. For efficient training, Gomez Aviation will not start training if you are more than 5 months away from your 17th birthday.
- Read, write, and speak English.
- Complete a home study ground school course or receive in-person ground training from an instructor.
- Pass an aeronautical written test.
- Receive required flight training and a logbook endorsement from an instructor certifying that you are ready to pass the practical test.
- Pass your checkride and get your ticket.
Medical and TSA
You will also need a Medical Certificate, Third Class minimum. This is not required to start training, but it is required once you are ready to solo. If you intend to become a professional pilot, it is recommended to get a First Class Medical to ensure you qualify.
Gomez Aviation strongly suggests getting a medical certificate before training in case you have a disqualifying medical condition. To obtain a Medical Certificate, visit an Aviation Medical Examiner. Most insurance policies cover this. You can find one at ameforesight.com/ame.
Under TSA Regulations, 49 CFR 1552, you must provide proof of U.S. citizenship prior to training. A passport or birth certificate will qualify. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you must receive authorization from TSA directly. Contact Gomez Aviation in this case for assistance. This is not required to go on a discovery flight.
Ground School
Although not required, Gomez Aviation strongly recommends completing a home study ground school course before starting. This optimizes the learning process by establishing background knowledge in the areas of operation. Completing ground school before starting can lead to faster learning and less time spent.
If you want to step it up a notch, take your FAA written test after completing ground school. This checks off one requirement and demonstrates that your ground knowledge is up to speed. King Schools and Gleim courses are recommended. After finishing, you will receive your written test endorsement, then schedule an appointment at an FAA-approved testing center.
