Instrument Proficiency Check

If you have not kept up with your 6 HITS, an Instrument Proficiency Check gets you current again through required ACS instrument tasks.

When You Need an IPC

If you have not kept up with your 6 HITS, you will need to satisfactorily complete an Instrument Proficiency Check.

Unlike a Flight Review, there is no minimum ground or flight time requirement. However, required tasks must be completed per the Instrument Rating ACS.

A good rule of thumb is to expect around 1-2 hours for ground review and around an hour of flight time to complete the required flight tasks.

AATD and Airplane Requirements

A portion of the IPC can be accomplished in an AATD. The circle-to-land and landing tasks must be completed in the actual airplane.

Required Flight Tasks

The flight portion of the IPC is built around required Instrument Rating ACS tasks.

  • Holding procedures.
  • Unusual attitudes.
  • Intercepting and tracking navigation sources, including VOR, ILS, and GPS.
  • Precision approach, non-precision approach, missed approach, and circle-to-land approach.
  • Emergency procedures, including partial panel for ASEL.
